Search Engine Promotion

SEO 101

You Need to promote your site in the search engines to get some traffic to your site. An added benefit of search engine promotion is that the traffic you receive are only people who are interested in your site's "offering", they were searching for what you offer.

Promotion of your website with the search engines can be roughly done in two ways; you can promote your site in the "organic" search results or in the
"pay per click (PPC)" results. While both of these will take you to your intended audience if you do them well, there are differences you should be aware of.

Organic
search engine spider crawls through your website and rank it relative to the rest of the crawled pages it has in its database.
Pay Per Click
you bid or pay a certain fee for a certain position in the results.

Some search engines may be one form or the other (PPC or Organic) but the ones that really count are a combination of both, displaying "pay per click" together with organic results on one results page.

On the whole it can be said that PPC search engine promotion centers around defining relevant keywords and key phrases, writing mini ads and paying for a position in the search results. The results are immediate and you have direct control over positioning. The downside is "no money, no love".

Organic search engine promotion is more of a long term commitment that means you have to optimize your site for the search engines, and gather enough popularity in the web community. The results are relatively stable and when done right, lasting. The downside here is the effort and time it might take to get your site optimized as an afterthought.

Both types of search engine promotion can turn out costly depending on the competition and the skills you possess. Fact is the more you can do yourself or "in-house", the less you will have to invest.
