Introduction

Over 300 million people had access to the World Wide Web (WWW) in July 2000. This is a very tempting statistic that prompts more and more individuals, businesses, schools, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies to go online with their own Web sites. The fact is you can't ignore the presence of 300 million people no matter what you do for a living. Building and hosting a Web site is a sure way to connect with this online community.

However, as you may have already discovered, building a Web site is the easy part; getting the desired audience to it is a lot more challenging. The initial promotion effort is usually the hardest. There are search engines to submit to, links to make, banner exchanges to sign up for, e-mail databases to create, lists to post to, and so on. This book is designed to make the task much easier for you. Each chapter takes you through a series of steps that help you focus on a specific area of Web development and promotion.

It is absolutely vital that you do not design a Web promotion strategy with a traditional communications model in mind. The feature that distinguishes the Web from all other traditional mass media channels is the opportunity for interaction between you and your audience. The Web allows your site users to share their knowledge, interests, and opinions with you and each other. In this new model, information or content is not merely transmitted from a sender to a receiver, but instead, is shared and experienced by participants in a mediated environment.

One of your roles on the Web is to create such a mediated environment in which your target audience can interact with you and each other, receive and contribute information, and perform e-commerce transactions. This book outlines a framework to incorporate all of the necessary elements of a successful mediated model on the Web and offers examples of Web sites currently employing similar models.

Be prepared to roll up your sleeves for there is a lot of work at every step. Fortunately, you don’t have to do everything yourself; the book will teach you practical ways to work with others to increase your Web traffic. Everyone (except your competitors) will benefit from the results of having more users on your Web site.

The requirements for best use of this book include a connection to the Internet, a Web browser, an e-mail program, and a Web site you want to promote. If you do not own a Web site but still want to experiment with the techniques discussed in the book, turn first to technique #87 in Chapter 9 to learn how to get a free Web site of your own. You can then apply most of the techniques presented in the book.

101 WAYS TO BOOST YOUR WEB TRAFFIC assumes you have some experience with Web site development and promotion. However, it can be used by anyone who owns or plans to own a Web site. The book’s purpose is to help you get the “largest possible audience” to come to your Web site. This is how you will measure the results of using the information it contains. It is also your reward for the long hours of work you invest in site development and promotion.

Free feel to jump from one section of the book to another if you feel it will be easier to learn that way. Each of the 101 techniques can be used separately or be integrated with other techniques in the book. Depending on your specific needs, you may start anywhere in the book and come back to other sections later. The 101 Ways Implementation Checklist included at the back of the book is meant to help you manage this process. Use it to set priorities and to keep track of your progress. You will find that some techniques will produce better results than others. Focus on these key techniques and use them to develop a strategic plan for your Web site.

I truly hope you succeed in boosting your Web traffic and begin to enjoy the fame and fortune that come with it.
